We present a many-particle approach to the absorption coefficient for radiation in a plasma, starting from the relation of the absorption coefficient α(ω) and the refractive index n(ω) to the dielectric function. Within a generalized Linear-response theory, the dielectric function is expressed in terms of equilibrium correlation functions which allow for a perturbative treatment. We determine the dielectric function for fully ionized weakly coupled plasmas in the low-density limit. The total dynamical collision frequency is calculated within a generalized Gould-De Witt approach. Dynamical screening is taken into account by partial summation of loop diagrams, while strong collision effects are treated within a ladder approximation. Comparison is made with simulation studies.
