Laboratory investigestion on the dynamics of whistler waves — •Christian Franck and Thomas Klinger — Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Universität, Institut für Physik, 17489 Greifswald
Although whistler waves are studied for almost a century, they are still the subject of intense research. Laboratory experiments are of particular value to clarify satellite data which is often ambiguous or at least difficult to interprete. The new large linear plasma device VINETA is designed to establish a large (4m long, up to 40cm diameter) and dense (ne ≤ 1019m−3) plasma with different magnetic configurations (max. field B0=120mT). With it, the experiment ideally suited to study whistler wave propagation. This paper reports first results from pulse and wave packet excited (electron and ion) whistler waves in different magnetic topologies.
