At the synchrotron SIS of GSI Darmstadt a precision active plasma lens is in operation. It provides the strong fine focusing of high-energetic heavy ion beams. An overview of the experience gained in nine years of operation will be given. Also to be shown is the current research, which is based on a special configuration of the z-pinch discharge that enables a ring focus besides the point focus. To conclude, a research program for the future will be presented. The aim of this program is to use the existing plasma lens and its pulse generator to gain information that is needed for the design of a new plasma lens for future accelerators.
This work is funded by the BMBF.
