Investigations of low frequency fluctuations in a helicon discharge — •Christiane Schröder and Thomas Klinger — Institut für Physik, Universität Greifswald, Germany
A cw helicon source is used to create a long (l≈ 4 m) large-diameter (d≈ 10 cm) magnetized (B=20−120 mT) plasma column in the new linear plasma device VINETA. The scientific program for the VINETA device includes the study of gradient-driven low-frequency instabilities, especially electrostatic drift waves (low β) and electromagnetic drift-Alfvén waves (finite β). The device allows one to establish experimental conditions with β≪ 1 as well as β≥ me/mi. A first step is the identification and controlled destabilization of the different instability types. Probe diagnostics provide density and potential profiles and yield density and potential fluctuation measurements. This paper reports first results of the investigation of low-frequency fluctuations for various discharge conditions.
