The knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) for chemical elements and compounds is an important prerequisite to theoretical investigations in plasma physics. However, the number of approved data for many materials is quite insufficient. Therefore, measurements of EOS remain a significant goal of physical research. Advanced sources of heavy ion beams and short-pulse lasers as well as the XFEL project at DESY/Hamburg strongly increase opportunities for high precision measurements of EOS in a wide range of density and temperature. Especially the creation and probing of strongly-coupled plasmas prove to be a new challenge for theory and experiment.

This contribution shows several experimental methods and theoretical models, for instance in the field of adiabatic compression of materials at low entropy with help of intense heavy ion beams at GSI/Darmstadt. Isochoric heating by short pulses of photons serves as another chance. Furthermore, recent investigations of predicted phase transitions and dramatic changes in material characteristics like the electrical conductivity will be discussed.
