Laser-matter interaction experiments have been carried out at the GSI nhelix-laser facility to advance X-ray spectroscopic methods. Employing spherically bent crystals we discovered a strong spatial restriction of transitions originating from the autoionizing states 1s2lnl’. Contrary, usual resonance line emission of H- and He-like ions show, first, extended inhomogenous emission and, second, opacities of the order of 1000 are encountered. Obviously, these properties diminish any diagnostic sensitivity of resonance lines. We therefore have developed a new approach which is based on the analysis of Rydberg and forbidden transitions of autoionizing states. This leads to a minimization of line of sight integration effects and essentially opacity free diagnostics. We demonstrate the new method analysing the X-ray emission from massive Mg, Al and Si targets. Apart density and temperature determination, non-Maxwellian electron sensitivity is discovered. The method is therefore of general interest for dense plasma experiments.
