The current density distribution of a z-pinch discharge (length 90 mm, Ø 23 mm, Imax ≈ 300 kA) was surveyed with the aid of an ion beam. For this, the bending of the ions in the magnetic field of the discharge was employed. A pepper pot masks out 61 beamlets of a 100 MeV/u heavy ion beam for simultaneous measurements at different radii. The data analysis presupposes a cylindrically symmetric current density distribution, as well as purely radial current densities in the electrodes. The diagnostic method described here does not influence the plasma under investigation. It yields high spatial and temporal resolution (100 µm, 10 ns) and does not require special windows. It is therefore well suited for dense, hot plasmas with magnetic flux densities in the order of a Tesla.
