The response of a dense relativistic charged particle system to external fields is analyzed. The application of Flemings hyperplane formulation leads to a natural introduction of single-time quantities, keeping the covariance of the theory. The equations of motion for the statistical operator and the single-time correlation functions can serve as a starting point to construct a quantum hierarchy. From this system a kinetic equation for the gauge-invariant Wigner function in mean-field approximation could be derived.
External fields are accounted for as classical fields. It is shown, that perturbation theory with respect to quantum effects can be applied after suitable transformation of the field operators, even in the case of strong external fields.
An appropriate spinor decomposition of the Wigner matrix can be used to examine the kinetic equation further and to apply further approximations. In particular the extension of linear response theory to relativistic quantum systems is discussed.
