Due to the long range of the high energy heavy ion beam at SIS very homogenous strongly coupled plasmas are produced at solid state density.
Several experiments were performed in the year 2000, at the HHT experimental area, with different high energy beams in order to investigate the features of the plasmas obtained and of the beam - solid matter interaction. Diagnostics like schlieren, backlighting shadowgraphy, time resolved spectroscopy in visible and VUV regions and advanced imaging techniques were used, for targets composed of layers of metal and plexiglas and rare gas crystals.
The shock waves induced by the ion beam were analysed in a first stage using the composed targets (metal and plexiglas). Based on these results, further optimizations can be done for obtaining an increased cold compression of solid hydrogen targets.
