High Order Harmonic Generation from Solids: Comparison of Experimental and Numerical Results — •Clemens Dietrich, Alexander Tarasevitch, Christian Blome, and Dietrich von der Linde — Institut für Laser- und Plasmaphysik, Universität Essen, Universitätsstr. 5, 45117 Essen, Germany
It is well known that the interaction of an intense femtosecond laser pulse
with a solid
surface is accompanied by the generation of optical harmonics of high
order.
We performed experiments using high contrast
laser pulses of 120 fs duration and energy up to 150 mJ from a 10
Hz titanium
sapphire system. The harmonics were emitted in a well collimated beam.
Harmonics up to the 17th order were readily recorded in a single shot.
Using a controllable pre-pulse we changed the plasma scale length and
found a dramatic decrease in the harmonic efficiency. Measured harmonic
efficiency and its dependency upon the plasma scale length are inconsistent
with available
1D PIC simulations. To investigate this point, we are using the fully
relativistic 1D PIC code LPIC++ [1].
