X-ray backlighter have become an important and widely used diagnostic tool for dense plasmas for the last two decades. With this technique it is possible to probe plasmas to measure densities, instabilities and opacities. In this project we will use the x-ray emission of a laser plasma to backlight heavy ion produced plasmas, exploding foils, implosion targets and kryogenic targets to determine their plasma parameters. Also shadowgraphs of the plasma with a high temporal and spatial resolution will be performed. We will report about the state of the project, results of first experiments and future plans of the backlighter project at GSI.
