Secure quantum communication over arbitrary distances — •Hans Aschauer and Hans-J. Briegel — Theresienstr. 37
80333 München

We give a security proof of quantum cryptography based entirely on entanglement purification. Our proof applies to all possible attacks (individual and coherent) and to arbitrary distances. We prove the security of the obtained quantum channel which may not only be used for quantum key distribution, but also for secure transmission of quantum information.

Our proof has relevance for practical as well as principial aspects of quantum communication: on the one hand, entanglement purification is the essential part of quantum repeaters. On the other hand, we show for the first time that secure quantum communication is possible by means of imperfect apparatus.
