We intend to produce a truly continuous and coherent source of matter waves by transposing the time-dependent aspects of the evaporative cooling process, as used for atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, into the spatial domain. Rubidium atoms are laser-cooled in a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap and are injected into a linear magnetic guide by means of a continuous moving molasses. In the magnetic guide, the atoms will be evaporatively cooled as they propagate along the guide.
After a short presentation of the project, the main part of the talk will focus on the properties of the beam of cold atoms leaving the 2D-MOT.
