Towards a source for nonlinear atom optics — •Thomas Anker1, Karen Forberich1, Bernd Eiermann1, Jo Bellanca1, Jürgen Mlynek2, and Markus Oberthaler11Universität Konstanz, Fachbereich Physik, Fach M696, 78457 Konstanz — 2Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin

The experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute atomic gases has facilitated the extension of atom optics from the linear to the nonlinear regime. Numerical calculations show that even for repulsive atom-atom interaction bright solitons can be realized in a moving periodic potential [1]. We give a status report on the experimental progress towards the first demonstration of this atomic soliton.

We describe the experimental setup for realizing the Bose-Einstein condensation with 87Rb atoms utilizing an atomic funnel and a TOP trap. We present the current status of the experiment, show the latest results, and discuss the next experimental steps.
