In recent years the development of cw-OPOs has made enormous progress, mainly enabled by the development on high power pump sources and novel nonlinear materials. While first infrared pumped OPOs are now commercially available, cw-OPOs pumped by visible lasers are still in the state of demonstration experiments.
To realize a practical cw light source with a broad emission range in the red and near infrared, we have implemented a new OPO setup. It is based on a bow-tie shaped ring cavity resonating the signal and pumped in single pass by a commercial single frequency laser (Coherent Verdi) at 532 nm. As nonlinear material we use large area PPKTP- as well as PPLN-multigrating crystals.
For the PPKTP-crystal emission was obtained from 669 to 2600 nm which is by far the broadest emission range ever reported for cw-OPOs. A minimum threshold of 290 mW, a maximum output power of 800 mW in the idler and up to 80 % pump depletion were observed. The device is expected to operate stably on a single frequency after introduction of an etalon into the cavity.
We also present results obtained with PPLN, give a direct comparison between the two materials and discuss new OPO concepts and approaches to further extend the spectral coverage.
