We have theoretically investigated the amplified spontaneous emission of a high harmonic (the weak probe wave) that is generated by laser radiation (the strong pump wave) passing through an atomic medium. A self-consistent system of equations for the spatio-temporal distribution of the intensity of the probe wave in the interaction volume and for the probabilities of stimulated emission and absorption of high-harmonic photons is formulated.
A simple analytical solution of this system is obtained for the case when the approximation of a fixed probe-wave intensity is used. The gain of the high harmonic is calculated. We demonstrate that the amplification of the probe wave may be large in the case when it is passed through the atomic medium with a small temporal delay with respect to the driving laser wave. It is shown, that the gain of a high harmonic may be substantial even if the delay is as short as a few optical periods of the pump wave.
The possibilities of an experimental observation of the amplification effect are briefly discussed.
