Using a novel setup we can adiabatically transfer cold atoms from a spheric magnetic quadrupole into a micro-trap and compress the atomic cloud in order to achieve huge collision rates. The magnetic micro-trap consists of 25 mm long parallel Cu conductors at a width of 3 to 30 µm which are electroplated on a Al2O3 substrate. Experimentally, we determined current densities in the conductors which provide magnetic field gradients of up to 5·105 G/cm. Hence, a ratio between the transversal and the longitudinal oscillation frequency of about 100,000 can be attained. The setup complies with ultra-high vacuum requirements and is designed for the generation of a one-dimensional quantum gas.
