Properties of single atoms in a dipole trap — •Wolfgang Alt, Stefan Kuhr, Dominik Schrader, Martin Müller, Victor Gomer, and Dieter Meschede — Universität Bonn, Institut für Angewandte Physik, Wegelerstraße 8, D-53115 Bonn

We demonstrate spectroscopy on few cold cesium atoms stored in a red detuned optical dipole trap.

The dipole trap, made of two counterpropagating Nd:YAG laser beams, is loaded with cold cesium atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap.

The atoms in the dipole trap are then excited with a weak probe and a repumping laser beam. The frequency of the probe laser beam is swept over the resonance line while the fluorescence light is recorded. From the observed light shift of the transition (ac stark effekt), which is induced by the dipole trap laser, the trap depth and the temperature of the atoms can be estimated. This method is applicable with small numbers of atoms, where other methods (e. g. time of flight) can not be used.
