The quasi-electrostatic optical dipole trap (QUEST) formed by the focussed beam of a CO2 laser is an ideal environment to study ultracold collisions of atoms in the electronic ground state. At a laser power of 100 W and a focus size of 150 µm the trap depth is 660 µK for cesium and 270 µK for lithium atoms. The storage time due to rest-gas collisions exceeds one minute [1].
We present an optimized loading scheme for the simultaneous transfer of Cs and Li atoms from a magneto-optical trap into the QUEST. The resulting number of simultaneously transferred Cs and Li atoms is 5×105 and 5×104, respectively. The optimum loading strategies for Cs and Li differ significantly due to the difference in the temperature achievable with laser cooling. The typical temperature of trapped Cs is 15 µK, whereas the lithium distribution remains highly athermic with an effective temperature of 70 µK. Simultaneous trapping of two atomic species allows the detailed study of heteronuclear ultracold collisions [2] and offers a large variety of thermodynamic phenomena [3].
