A High Flux Atom Source for Bose-Einstein Condensation — •Andreas Marte, Johannes Schuster, Bernhard Sang, Stefan Wössner, and Gerhard Rempe — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, D-85748 Garching, Germany

We have realized a high flux source of rubidium atoms based on a double magneto-optical trap (MOT) system with a large capture volume. By carefully optimizing intensity and detuning of the trapping laser as well as the magnetic field gradient we achieve loading rates of up to 4×1010 atoms/s and capture more than 2× 1010 atoms in a vapour cell MOT. The optimum parameters are in good agreement with the predictions of a simple analytical model. The atoms are transferred to a second UHV-MOT by means of a resonant laser beam. We present a detailed study of the transfer process.
