A Rb Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-MOT system — •Torsten Herz, Margit Dornseifer, Daniel Frese, Victor Gomer, and Dieter Meschede — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Bonn, Germany
Macroscopic quantum systems have been developed to a new and important object of physical research. Therefore we have built up an experimental apparatus to efficiently produce a BEC. We use a double-MOT system. The first MOT is optimized to collect as many Rb atoms as possible. Whereas in the second MOT the compression of the phase-space begins. This compression is limited if laser optical methods are used. Rf-induced evaporative cooling in a magnetic trap can help. Our magnetic trap is a Ioffe-Pritchard configuration [1] which produces a harmonic magnetic field. By further compression of the phase-space in this trap the Bose-Einstein condensation is reached. /par We report about the status of our experiment. [1] T. Esslinger, I. Bloch, T. W. Hänsch, Phys.
