Thermally induced birefringence in Nd:YAG lasers prevents TEM00 operation with large mode volume and thus high average output power because the stability ranges for radial and tangential polarization do not overlap. One way to compensate thermally induced birefringence is to exchange the radial and tangential polarization with a Faraday rotator between two subsequent passes of the active medium in the laser resonator. The residual birefringence of a compensation scheme with imaging of the rod principal plane onto itself was measured to remain below 1 % over the entire pump power range. Resonators with this type of compensation might show an enlarged stability range.
