We present quantum optics experiments with single self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QD). We experimentally observe photon antibunching in fluorescence from a single QD which proves the atom-like nature of single QDs at cryogenic temperatures. We investigate cavity-QED effects by tuning the emission of a single QD located in a microdisk resonator into resonance with a high-quality factor whispering gallery mode. In resonance we observe a shortening of the spontaneous emission lifetime, i.e. Purcell effect. Based on these results we demonstrate a source for heralded (triggered) single photons (single photon turnstile device) based on pulsed laser excitation of a single QD with nearly 100% efficiency.
