Pure Fock states of a resonator radiation field can be generated in the micromaser in a trapping state experiment in steady state [1] and in a pulsed experiment using state reduction [2,3]. The purity of the so prepared states was measured for the first time [2]. The generation of the Fock states using this method is based on a statistical process. Here we show a method of preparing pure Fock states on demand in a pulsed experiment, making use of trapping state dynamics. In this mode the maser can also be seen as a deterministic source for single atoms in a certain quantum state.
