The British-German gravitational wave detector GEO 600 [1,2] is a Michelson interferometer with an armlength of 600 m, which is located close to Hannover. After the last final optical components have been installed, data taking will begin this year. The basic ideas of laser interferometric gravitational wave detection are introduced and the technical challenges of the realisation of the project are outlined. The current status of the project is presented.
