Propagation of ultra-short laser pulses in resonant three-level systems — •Ralf Netz and Thomas Feurer — Institut für Optik und Quantenelektronik, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Max-Wien-Platz 1, D-07743 Jena

We present a detailed study of the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with a resonant three level system. As expected, for low intensities a linear model and for higher intensities a semi-classical model (Maxwell-Bloch) is fully sufficient to describe the observed results. In both cases, however, it is essential to have an accurate knowledge of the incident electric field, i.e. the amplitude and the phase, in order to simulate the interaction process on small time scales. It is shown that even the phase modulation of the pulse influences the reshaping process during pulse propagation and, in addition, may drastically influence the population distribution within the three level system. The transient population distribution within the three levels is monitored by a delayed probe pulse.
