Electromagnetically induced transparency, also known as dark resonance, describes the suppression of absorption on an atomic transition by simultaneous coherent driving of a coupled transition. Such a manipulation of the absorption on a dipole line, which would usually allow only Doppler cooling, permits laser cooling of a trapped multi-level atom to the ground state of its motion. The method is more efficient than conventional sideband cooling while posing less stringent experimental requirements. We present the theory of this new ground state cooling technique. Its experimental realisation is reported elsewhere [1].
