Evaporative Cooling in Lithographic Magnetic Microtraps — •J. Reichel, P. Hommelhoff, W. Hänsel, and T. W. Hänsch — MPI für Quantenoptik und Sektion Physik der Universität München, 80799 München
Integrated magnetic microtraps, which manipulate atoms with sub-micrometer precision in close proximity to a substrate surface, have proven to be an enabling tool for complex atom manipulation experiments. Using this technique, we have recently demonstrated several novel devices, including the magnetic potential for a trapped-atom interferometer and a No-dqlinear colliderNo-dq device for slow atoms. While all microtrap experiments so far have used thermal atomic clouds, such potentials are particularly interesting with single atoms or condensed atomic ensembles. The next step is therefore to evaporatively cool the atomic cloud in the microtrap. Indeed, magnetic microtraps are especially well suited for this task because they are capable of creating extremely high field gradients (in the T/cm region). The current state of this experiment will be reported.
