We present a detailed study of an all-reflective pulse shaping device based an a newly developed liquid crystal display (LCD). As compared to previous devices, the LCD has 640 stripes which may be addressed with a 12 bit resolution. Therefore, the manifold of accessible pulse modulations exceeds that of previous devices by an enormous factor. The characterization has been performed by frequency resolved optical gating. The results show an excellent agreement between the experimental and the simulated results. Closed-loop feedback operation of the pulse shaper was applied to optimize a number of experimental problems, such as pulse compression.
