When ultrashort laser pulses are tightly focused inside optical transparent bulk materials local structural changes and in consequence a permanent refractive index gradient are created. We find a refractive index increase in the order of 10-3 in crystals and different glasses. When the sample is moved with respect to the laser beam a refractive index profile as in a buried waveguide can be produced. We report on the production of polarization maintaining waveguides in crystalline silica and discuss their properties. A further topic is the fabrication of active waveguides in different doped glasses. This work is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft ( SFB 196 )
