External cavity diode lasers provide narrow linewidth and good tunability for spectroscopic and quantum optics applications. The presented laser combines an extended and an external cavity, a feature which is most reasonable and easiest realized with the use of highly efficient transmission gratings. For this purpose we use volume holographic gratings. They provide strong optical feedback for the laser diode and permit the distribution of the optical components on both sides of the grating, which leads to better FSRs. With the presented configuration a narrow linewidth of 6 kHz, a tuning range of 2 GHz and an operation range of 20 nm are optained. The long term stability achieved by locking on saturation spectroscopy will be discussed.
