Blue and red Tm:ZBLAN upconversion fiber laser — •Volker Gaebler and Hans J. Eichler — Optical Institute, Technical University Berlin, Str. d. 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin, Germany
We report a monolithic low threshold 482nm Tm:ZBLAN upconversion fiber laser. The laser cavity consists of a directly coated single-mode fluorid fiber which significantly reduces the coupling losses and is suitable to be pumped by laser diodes. The laser operation, degradation and threshold characteristics of the blue 482nm and red 650nm upconversion laser transition have been investigated for different fiber materials and infra-red pump sources. New quantum dot diode lasers and conventional diodes have been tested for upconversion excitation of Tm:ZBLAN fibers. V. Gaebler’s e-mail address is gaebler@physik.tu-berlin.de.
