Transient dynamics of intracavity absorption signals in solid state lasers — •Marcus Risch, Arnold Stark, Valery Baev, and Peter Toschek — Institut für Laser-Physik, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstr.9, 20355 Hamburg
The sensitivity of multimode lasers to intracavity absorption grows with the duration of laser emission during the initial stage of laser operation [1]: The spectral signals as well as the corresponding effective absorption path length is expected to grow in step with time and depends linearly on the absorption coefficient. This feature is used for precise measurements of ultra-weak coefficients of intracavity absorption [2]. In solid state lasers the transient dynamics is superimposed by relaxation oscillations that can significantly modify the evolution of the signals of intracavity absorption. Model calculations provide the parameter ranges of some multimode lasers, such as Nd-, Yb-, and Tm-doped fibre lasers, that are suitable for precise quantitative measurements of absorption; they compare well with experimental data.
