Energy transfer in Yb3+-doped Sesquioxides — •Arne Bolz, Volker Peters, Klaus Petermann, and Günter Huber — Institut für Laser-Physik, Jungiusstr. 9a, 20355 Hamburg

The rare earth ion doped sesquioxides Sc2O3, Y2O3 and Lu2O3 are interesting materials for high-power solid-state laser operations because of their high heat-conductivity. Additionally, these materials can be doped with high Yb3+-concentrations, which makes them suitable also for thin disc lasers.

However, at high Yb3+-concentrations the quantum efficiency decreases due to quenching processes by unwanted impurities. Therefore the energy migration within the Yb3+-ions and the energy transfer from Yb3+ to Cr-, Dy-, Er-, Eu-, Ho-, Nd-, Pr-, Sm-, Tb-, and Tm-ions as well as their effect on the quantum efficiency were analyzed in detail. From these analyzes it is now known, which of these ions have to be avoided in the crystal growth process to obtain highest Yb3+ quantum efficiencies.
