Line shapes of coherent population trapping resonances — •N. Bartens, C. Affolderbach, S. Knappe, M. Stähler, and R. Wynands — Institute for Applied Physics, Bonn University, Wegelerstraße 8, D-53115 Bonn, Germany
We are using coherent population trapping resonances (dark resonances) in thermal alkali atomic vapors for various precision measurements. A prerequisite is that all systematic effects are well understood, including the exact shape of the resonance lines and their possible change due to external influences. We describe a technique that allows to extract the line shapes from a modulation measurement with high fidelity. The characteristic dark resonance line shapes as a function of the operating parameters, for instance laser detuning from optical resonance, have been investigated. The complicated line shapes can be reproduced with a very simple model, using only two effective parameters.
