Today, one of the most challenging research topics in applied laser physics is the field of laser projection. Presently engaged systems use a passively mode-locked Nd:YVO oscillator delivering 10 ps pulses at a repetition rate as high as 80 MHz. These pulses are amplified to 40 W average power by a four stage single-pass bulk Nd:YVO amplifier system. Using nonlinear frequency conversion visible laser light in the power range of several watts is generated. In this contribution, we report on a cladding-pumped, ytterbium-doped large-core-area (55 µm core) fiber amplifier that is capable of generating 51.2 W average power at 1064 nm center wavelength, 80 MHz repetition rate and 10 ps pulse duration. In a ytterbium-doped large-mode-area (30 µm core) fiber the amplification of these pulses up to 43.2 W with diffraction limited beam quality (M2 = 1.3) could be realized. Power scaling limitations due to nonlinear distortions like self-phase modulation and stimulated Raman scattering will be discussed.
