Spectroscopy and continous wave lasing of Yb,Ho:Sc2O3 and Tm,Ho:Sc2O3 at 2.1µm — •Janis Mohr, Michael Mond, Volker Peters, Ernst Heumann, Klaus Petermann, and Günter Huber — Institut für Laser-Physik, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstr. 9a, D-20355 Hamburg

Trivalent Holmium operating in the 2µm eye-safe region can be used for remote sensing, range finding and optical communication. However, operation in the high power range often causes thermal lensing effects in the crystal. Facing such problems, Scandia (Sc2O3) represents a host material with a comparatively high thermal conductivity of 16.5W/mK. We present to our knowledge first operation of an Yb,Ho: Sc2O3 laser at 2110nm and a Tm,Ho: Sc2O3 laser at 2120nm pumped by a Ti: Al2O3 laser. Maximum output powers of 5mW cw at 710mW absorbed pump power in case of Yb,Ho:Sc2O3 and 100mW cw at 1280 mW absorbed pump power in case of Tm,Ho: Sc2O3 were observed. First diode-pumped Tm,Ho:Sc2O3 cw ground-state lasing has also been demonstrated.
