Saturable absorbers for broadening the emission spectrum of gain-switched Ti:sapphire lasers to more than 50 nm — •Ingo Brandenburg, Michael Seefeldt, and Ralf Menzel — Institute of Physics, University of Potsdam, Am Neuen Palais 10, 14469 Potsdam, Germany

By using suitable intracavity saturable absorbers it was possible to broaden the emission spectrum of a gain-switched Ti:sapphire laser. Bandwidths of more than 50 nm (FWHM) in nearby Gaussian spectrum were realized. We used for the saturable absorption the laser dyes DDTTCI and HDITCP. These laser dyes have their spectral absorption maximum near the emission maximum of the free-running Ti:sapphire laser at 780 nm. The absorbers were characterized by their nonlinear optical properties. The insert of the laser dyes in the Ti:Sapphire laser was investigated theoretically by using rate equations.
