The experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute atomic gases has facilitated the extension of atom optics from the linear to the nonlinear regime. It is well known that Bose-condensed atoms can be treated to a good approximation by a mean-field theory, leading to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE).

In the case of repulsive atom-atom interaction and evolution in free space dark solitons are solutions of the GPE [1][2]. However, bright atomic solitons are interesting for applications because the nonlinearity can be maintained for a longer time. The general idea for preparing bright solitons with repulsive interaction is to use atoms in a one-dimensional periodic potential utilizing the negative effective mass [3].

We present an analytical and numerical investigation of one-dimensional bright solitons for atomic many-particle matter waves with repulsive interaction. We present the feasibility of an experimental realization and discuss the necessary parameter space.
