Uniqueness of Simultaneity in Special Relativity — •Domenico Giulini — Institut für Theoretische Physik der Universität Zürich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, CH-8057 Zürich, Schweiz
It is often asked to what extent Einstein’s definition of simultaneity (in special relativity) relative to an inertial frame is unique (or conventional). We approach this question by first definining “simultaneity” to be an Aut-invariant equivalence relation on R4, where Aut is the automorphism group of spacetime, and, second, classify all such relations.
