We consider static axially symmetric solutions of
SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory,
representing gravitating monopole-antimonopole pairs (MAPs) [1,2].
With increasing gravitational coupling strength α a branch of
gravitating MAP
solutions emerges from the flat space MAP.
When gravity becomes too strong for regular MAP solutions to persist,
a second branch of solutions emerges, extending back to α=0.
Along this branch the MAP solutions shrink to zero size,
as α→ 0,
and approach the Bartnik-McKinnon solution with one node (after rescaling).
Excited solutions with k nodes of the gauge field
functions exist, representing k MAPs located on the symmetry axis. These
solutions
do not possess a flat space limit with finite energy.
Imposing a regular event horizon centered at the origin, between the MAPs,
we obtain static axially symmetric neutral black hole solutions with hair,
which coincide with the globally regular MAP solutions in the limit of
vanishing horizon radius. The masses of the black holes solutions are
simply related to the masses of the corresponding globally regular
solutions.
