The Tracy-Widom distribution of the largest eigenvalue of a Gaussian random matrix reappears as the distribution of the height fluctuations in one dimensional growth models. We explain this surprising link in terms of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of surfaces in two dimensions with linear boundary constraints.
