Calibration of the wire positions of an ATLAS MDT chamber — •Sophia Chouridou, J. Dubbert, J. Elmsheuser, Ralf Hertenberger, Oliver Kortner, Alois Kraus, Felix Rauscher, Oliver Sahr, Dorothee Schaile, Arnold Staude, R. Ströhmer, Thomas Trefzger, and Vadym Zhuravlov — Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Sektion Physik, Am Coulombwall 1, D-85748 Garching

One of the first full scale prototypes of the Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer was built in 1998 at the Max Planck Institute in Munich in collaboration with the LMU Munich and Freiburg University and was placed in a muon testbeam at CERN. The tests necessary to verify if the chamber’s performance fulfills the high requirements (20µ m rms) needed in the demanding ATLAS environment were continued also in the summer of 1999. This time the chamber was filled with the ATLAS baseline gas ArCO2 (93:7). A method for determining the wire positions of the chamber using no external reference system was used for an area of the chamber consisting of about 50 tubes. The results obtained were in agreement with those of the X-Ray Tomograph at CERN within 10  µ m(rms). Simulation studies of the application of the method along the full length of a chamber (432 tubes), as well as systematic effects imposed in the results by certain parameters, were performed.
