If a nucleus is soft with respect to octupole vibrations or has an intrinsic octupole deformation, low-lying negative parity states appear in the ground state band of the nucleus. The positive and negative parity states form a disturbed rotational band. The states with negative parity are shifted up with respect to the unperturbed position.
We explain the parity splitting by a cluster interpretation of
the octupole deformation of the nuclei. Cluster configurations
AZ → A−4(Z−2)+4He have an energy which is close or even
lower than the energy of the compound nucleus [1].
We consider oscillations in mass asymmetry η=(A1−A2)/(A1+A2) near
|η|=1. The parity splitting appears then due to the tunneling between
the octupole deformed shape and its mirror image. We calculate the spin
dependence of the parity splitting, moments of inertia, strengths of E1 and
E2 transitions and multipole moments of octupole deformed nuclei in the
actinide region and compare them with
experimental data.
