Elastic proton scattering from the halo nuclei 6He and 8He was investigated in inverse kinematics at energies around 700 MeV/u with the aim to deduce the differential cross sections for the region of high momentum transfer, covering the first diffraction minimum. As compared to previous data taken in the region of small momentum transfer, which turned out to have high sensitivity on the size and the shape of the total nuclear matter density distribution, the present data are expected to allow for a more detailed insight in the structure of the alpha-like core in 6He and 8He. The experimental setup consisted of a 600 mg/cm2 liquid hydrogen target, a forward spectrometer for tracking and identifying the projectile nuclei, and a position sensitive scintillator wall for the detection of the recoil protons. This experimental arrangement allowed for very background-free data taking. The present status of the data analysis and preliminary results will be presented.
