Status of REX-ISOLDE — •O. Kester, D. Habs, T. Sieber, H. Bongers, and S. Emhofer — Sektion Physik der LMU München, Am Coulombwall 1, D-85748 Garching
The Radioactive beam Experiment (REX-ISOLDE) [1] a pilot experiment testing a new concept of post acceleration of radioactive ions at ISOLDE/CERN is now in the commissioning phase. Radioactive singly charged ions delivered by the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge bred to an A/q = 4.5 in an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and finally accelerated in a LINAC from 5 keV/u to the final energy between 0.8 and 2.2 MeV/u. First test measurements of the REXTRAP, the transfer line and the EBIS have been done as well as the first acceleration of stable beams from the EBIS with the REX-RFQ. In addition the mass spectrum of the rest gas ions created in the EBIS have been examined with the mass separator in order to determine essential EBIS parameter. This report gives an overview of the status of the project the test measurements and the time schedule for commissioning in 2001.
