High resolution spectral measurements of the ternary fission products 7,8,9Li from thermal neutron-induced fission of 236U* have been performed with the recoil mass-separator LOHENGRIN. Information about the formation probability of short-lived, neutron-unstable excited states was expected to be obtained. In order to measure the entire energy distribution of the ternary particles, energy degrader techniques were applied for the first time successfully for the higher particle energies. On the basis of the experimental data the formation probability of the second excited state in 8Li (Jπ=3+, τ=2×10−20 s, E*=2.26 MeV) during fission is estimated to 0.10−0.10+0.11.
