Dependence of K+ production on the system size: results from FOPI — •Anne Devismes — Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, 64291 Darmstadt
Heavy ion collisions at SIS energies (1-2 AGeV) offer a unique tool to probe the properties of hot and dense nuclear matter both in terms of its equation of state and of a possible partial restoration of chiral symmetry. The latter is predicted to lead to possible in-medium modifications of hadron properties in this energy range. In particular, the study of kaon production below or close to the threshold energy is recognized as being a useful probe to investigate these in-medium effects.
The FOPI collaboration has recently measured K+ production in Ca+Ca, Ru+Ru and Au+Au collisions at a beam energy of 1.5 AGeV. The kaon production probability is investigated as function of the number of participants in the collision. Experimental data are compared to the predictions of RBUU and IQMD models. In both cases, the data seem to favor the version of the calculations which includes in-medium modification of hadron properties.
