A 90O-Compton polarimeter utilizing silicon drift detectors. — •Jan They, Gerd Buschhorn, Rainer Kotthaus, and Dmitry Pugachev — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Physik (Werner-Heisenberg-Institut),F"ohringer Ring 6, 80805 M"unchen
A compact Compton polarimeter to be used for energy resolved linear polarization analysis of large angle Parametric X-radiation (PXR) in the energy range below 10 keV has been designed, built and calibrated with monochromatized synchrotron radiation [1]. The instrument employs 4 thermoelectrically cooled silicon drift detectors to determine the linear polarization vector by measuring the azimuthal modulation of X-rays scattered off a beryllium conus. The analyzing power is close to unity in agreement with expectations and Monte Carlo simulation results. Instrumental asymmetries of a few percent have been measured and corrected for with residual statistical uncertainties of O (10−3). The orientation of the polarization plane is determined to within less than 4 milliradians.
