The electric dipole moment of the neutron in chiral perturbation theory — •Bugra Borasoy — Physik-Department, Technische Universität München.
Strong CP-violation can be understood by adding a term in the QCD
Lagrangian
which violates P, T and CP. This new term is proportional to the
so-called
vacuum angle θ0, an unknown parameter, and its size may be
determined
from the electric dipole moment (EDM)
of the neutron, dnγ, with the most recent measurement
having it constrained to dnγ< 6.3 × 10−26 e cm.
The detection of a non-zero EDM would have important implications.
It would be the first observation of CP-violation outside the kaon
system
and might explain the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the
Universe.
In this talk, we discuss
the electric dipole moments of the neutron and the Λ
within the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
The construction of such a Lagrangian
is outlined and we are able to give an estimate for θ0.
